When I am at a customers site I am often asked “How did you draw our Active Directory so quick?“.  The answer is  – I cheat and I use the The Active Directory Topology Diagrammer tool (ADTD),  which enables Visio to automatically draw a diagram of your Active Directory environment, detailing it’s Domain topology, sites, OU structure and current Exchange 200X Server organisation.  The ADTD utility is free but you do need a copy of Visio to use the tool.

The ADTD is also an excellent troubleshooting tool for when replication breaks and you need to gain a visual picture of your environment.

  2. That is going to be so useful for troubleshooting in customers’ environments. I can’t tell you how often we wanted to know this information. Is there a limit to how complex of an environment it can diagram?

    1. I have seen one of the biggest Active Directory environments documented in this tool, with no issue.

It is worth noting that if you get a black site -it means “a site link with more than 2 sites“.
